Pomelo

The huge green citrus fruit you see in our produce islands above the grapefruit is the pomelo.  This 'granddaddy' of the grapefruit is very popular in Asian cuisine.  Try the recipe for Thai Pomelo Salad shown below, adapted from a Food.com recipe.
Incidentally, the Minneola tangelo, which you also see in our store, is a hybrid of the Dancy tangerine and the pomelo.  It derives its sweetness from the tangerine, and its tartness from the pomelo.

Thai Pomelo Salad

Ingredients:

Servings: 4

1 pomelo

1 fresh red or green chile

1 clove garlic, crushed

1 teaspoon honey

1 tablespoon fish sauce (optional)

juice of 2 limes

1 stalk finely sliced lemongrass

cilantro

4 large leaves iceberg lettuce

Directions:

  1. Peel and segment pomelo and place the pieces in a bowl.
  2. Make a dressing by combining the other ingredients.
  3. Pour the dressing over the fruit.
  4. Serve on lettuce leaf. and garnish with cilantro.

Variations: To make this a main dish, add crab, shrimp, and/or chicken.  If salt is an issue, cut down or leave out the fish sauce.

You may have seen our produce truck – if you're out early in the morning.  Dave is our produce buyer and department supervisor for both stores.

Dave is one of our original employees-one of our first hires at our inception in 1985!

He buys direct from the San Francisco produce market and from local growers when in season, including organic farmers.

You can be assured, if the produce isn't the best, Dave won't bring it "home" to Sonoma Market and Glen Ellen Village Market!
